Dave Papandrea is a Limited Licensed Counselor (LLC) in private practice at Trinity Family Counseling Center. Dave is a graduate of Oakland University with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Dave is currently a full-time firefighter with experience in post-traumatic and acute stress disorders. He also has experience in marriage and family counseling, as well as sex and pornography addictions, and adjustment and anxiety disorders. Dave serves as the fire union’s chaplain, and provides pastoral care to its membership. However, at the end of the day his favorite role is husband, and father of four.

Dave has experience working with a range of diverse populations. He has coordinated youth and young adult ministries and served as a crisis interventionist for families in need. He has experience in critical incident stress management within Oakland County. As a firefighter since 1997, Dave has had the opportunity to develop an understanding of, and empathy for, mental illness and mental health crises within the community. Prior to his career in the fire service, Dave worked in law enforcement and has a background in criminal justice.

Dave’s personal counseling philosophy is that he is a traveler on YOUR journey. He believes YOU are the expert of you, and that the power of change is already within you. It is his goal to walk with you on your journey to wellness, allowing you to lead at your own pace, hoping to point out items in your blind spots along the way.

Mental Health Counseling for First Responders

Dave is also a senior lieutenant with the Birmingham Fire Department and has proudly served with the cities of Ecorse and Hamtramck. Prior to his career in the fire service, Dave worked in law enforcement for the City of Birmingham.  Dave is committed to serving the mental health and wellness needs of first responders, and their families.

The decision to improve lives and relationships takes courage. Emergency responders pride themselves with professionalism. Dave encourages all responders to make sure their training includes being mentally ready for the job, and for their families at the end of their tour.

Listen to Dave share his journey from fire fighter to licensed mental health provider in this webinar co-hosted by Molly Jones, LSW, Clinical Education Coordinator for the IAFF Center of Excellence. You can catch Dave’s comments beginning at the 15:25 mark of this recording.

Designed for firefighters and the families who support them, this focused conversation with clinician Dave Papandrea, LLC, and Hannah Elmore turns front-line realities into practical, adaptive tools you can use on and off shift to manage stress from repeated traumatic exposures and build lasting resilience for a long, healthy career.
