Frequently Asked Questions.

Why is confidentiality important in child and teen counseling?

Confidentiality helps children and adolescents feel safe enough to open up. When a child trusts their counselor, they are more likely to share honestly, explore emotions, and make meaningful progress.

Counseling for minors includes confidentiality, but the level of parent involvement depends on your child’s age and developmental needs. Before counseling begins, the counselor and parent/guardian will discuss what communication will look like and what to expect.

Yes. With younger children, counselors often communicate more with parents about general themes and progress. With older teens, privacy is typically greater to support trust and openness.

Yes. Confidentiality must be broken if there is a safety concern or if required by law, such as:

  • Risk of self-harm or harm to others
  • Suspected abuse or neglect

Yes. If there is information that impacts your child’s safety, the counselor will share what is necessary with the parent/guardian.

Yes. Parents are welcome to share information at any time that may be helpful. Parent meetings or phone consultations can be scheduled when a more in-depth discussion is needed.

At Trinity, we are committed to supporting younger clients while honoring confidentiality. We recognize it can be difficult for parents not to know every detail, and we deeply appreciate the trust families place in us. We work to encourage open communication between children and parents as a part of their counseling experience.
