Liza Hinchey is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in private practice at Trinity Family Counseling Center.  She completed dual Master’s degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Art Therapy from Wayne State University, and is currently pursuing a PhD in psychology at Wayne State University.  Liza works with individuals, families, and groups across a range of presenting issues.

It takes courage to reach out when you feel that you can no longer manage the issues you face by yourself. But by taking this first step to look into counseling, you have already started on that path to change and to living the best version of your life. Liza’s approach to counseling comes from her belief that every person has the solutions to their concerns within themselves, and by participating in the therapeutic process they can better access these solutions. As a therapist, she is committed to acting as a guide and facilitator for her clients' self-exploration and empowerment.

Liza’s theoretical orientation involves an integrative approach that combines features of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Theory, Mindfulness-Based Therapies, and Art Therapy. However, no matter the method of counseling used, Liza believes each person and their life is unique, and she always approaches therapy as a collaborative effort in which the client identifies their needs. Liza will then work collaboratively with you toward those goals in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

Outside of Trinity, Liza is also an award-winning researcher at Wayne State University. In this role, she focuses on remaining up to date on the most current findings concerning how to best help her clients in therapy.

Liza’s specific areas of experience are:

Young Adult Transitions
Having worked extensively in university counseling centers, Liza specializes in helping young adults navigate this transitional period of their lives. Whether that transition is into a college environment or otherwise, the early adult years present unique challenges, and she provides support for her clients throughout that process.

Women's Mental Health
Both in her counseling practice and academically as a researcher at Wayne State University, Liza is passionate about guiding women towards a greater sense of personal empowerment. Through the therapeutic process, she focuses on helping women gain insight, create positive belief systems, and increase both their self-confidence and self-love.

Anxiety and Depression
Two of the most common, yet emotionally isolating struggles that affect people today, Liza is experienced in treating anxiety and depression in all age groups. She is trained in a wide range of skills and therapeutic techniques that help her clients heal and gain freedom from these concerns.

Children and Adolescents
Liza also specializes in counseling children and adolescents, and greatly enjoys providing them with creative, healthy ways to process their emotions. With years of experience working with parents and their children, she understands the dynamics and challenges that occur in families, and the desire that parents have to support their children through these challenges.
